Frequently Asked Questions:
- When can I start taking drivers ed? A student can start the classroom session and driving as early as 15 years old.
- How can I sign up? A deposit is required to enroll at Safeway. Safeway accepts cash, check, money order, Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Once enrolled, the student will receive the CDE form required to get the driver education permit.
- How can I get my permit? A student is eligible to get their driver education permit as early as 15 years old. The student must be enrolled in a driver ed program and can receive the permit no earlier than 3 weeks before their driver ed class begins. Once enrolled at Safeway, the student will be issued a CDE form that they must take to the BMV to receive the permit. The BMV will issue a paper permit and a picture permit. The student must carry both permits when they drive. If the students loses the permit, they must go to the BMV and get a duplicate permit. Starting July 1st, 2012, the BMV will require all students to pass a written test to obtain their permit. We recommend the student to take the classroom first so they can apply that knowledge for the written test. Please note that the student must arrive at least one hour prior to the Indiana BMV closing in order to take the written test.
- What forms are required to get a permit? The student must bring the CDE form, birth certificate, and social security card. The parent must bring their Indiana License, birth certificate, and two bills with the parent's name and address. These bills must be dated within 60 days of application of the permit.
- How can I schedule the driving lessons? We schedule the driving lessons once the student enrolls into Safeway's program. Safeway offers driving lessons Monday through Friday. The student will get to pick the dates and times that will work with their schedule. Safeway requires a 24 hour notice on the cancellation of driving lessons. If the lesson is cancelled within 24 hours of the lesson, then a $40 no show appointment fee is charged.
- Can I just take the driving lessons? Yes. We offer just the driving lessons only. The first one hour lesson is $80. Any lessons after the first lesson is $65 per hour, If you need just a refresher lesson, or want to get better at your all around driving, this is a great way to do so!
- Are there other kids in the car when I drive? No. You will have individual lessons with the instructor. If you want to ask questions, that's a great time to do it. The student is allowed to have their parents ride along if they like.
- Can I take the road test with Safeway? Yes! If a student receives a grade of PASS in both the driving portion and classroom, then they are eligible to take the road test at Safeway. The State of Indiana requires a student to receive a 80% or higher for a PASS grade. The road test can be taken when the student is 16 years old and 90 days, The road test is above and beyond the six hours of driving taken at Safeway Driving School.
- When can I get my license? Students are eligible to apply for a Driver's license at 16 and 90 days. Students must have held the permit for at least 180 days before applying for their license.
